The Kaninchen Dachshund

Tiny in size, but enormous in personality!

The Kaninchen Dachshund, also known as the Rabbit Dachshund or Kaninchenteckel, is the smallest of the three Dachshund varieties officially recognised by the FCI. The Dachshund originates from Germany, and the Kaninchen has a particularly special place in the German Teckel tradition. 🇩🇪

The name Kaninchen means “rabbit” in German. These little Dachshunds were historically developed to be small enough to work in smaller underground burrows and were particularly suited to hunting rabbits.

Today, the Kaninchen is just as loved for being a wonderful family companion. They may be tiny, but they have the unmistakable Dachshund character — intelligent, brave, affectionate, curious, playful and wonderfully full of themselves!

What makes a Kaninchen a Kaninchen?

Kaninchen size is officially determined by chest circumference rather than simply by weight. According to the FCI standard, an adult Kaninchen has a chest circumference of up to 30 cm, measured at 15 months or older.

The three Dachshund sizes are:

🐾 Standard: over 35 cm
🐾 Miniature: over 30 cm to 35 cm
🐾 Kaninchen: up to 30 cm

Kaninchen Dachshunds can be found in all three Dachshund coat varieties — Smooth-haired, Long-haired and Wire-haired.

A little dog with a BIG Dachshund heart

One of the things we love most about our Kaninchens is that they may be wonderfully petite, but they still have the true Dachshund spirit.

They are not simply “smaller Dachshunds” — Kaninchens are a recognised size variety with their own fascinating history and characteristics.

At Redamancy Dachshunds, our Kaninchens are raised with the same love, care and attention as all our puppies. For us, they are not just tiny puppies to be sold — they are special little souls looking for loving families where they can live indoors and become a cherished part of the family. ❤️🐾
