Boys vs Girls: Are We Being a Little Unfair to the Dachshund Boys?

“I would love a Dachshund… but definitely a girl.”

We hear this quite often at Redamancy.

And when we ask why, one answer seems to come up again and again: “I don’t want a boy because boys mark everywhere.”

Well… after more than 30 years of living with Dachshunds, breeding them, raising them, loving them and occasionally wondering who on earth taught you to do THAT?…

We think the boys may have been given a rather unfair reputation. 😂

So let’s talk about it!

💙 First things first… boys don’t automatically pee everywhere!

This is probably the biggest misconception we hear.

Yes, intact male dogs can be more prone to urine marking, particularly once they reach sexual maturity. Hormones certainly play a role.

But marking isn’t simply a “boy thing.” Girls mark too.

Yes, ladies… we’re letting the secret out! 😂

Female dogs can also mark their territory, and intact females may mark more around their heat cycle. Marking can also be triggered by other dogs, new smells, changes in the environment and social situations.

And in our experience, when you have a household full of Dachshunds, the girls are certainly not above leaving their own little messages around the place!

They just don’t usually lift their leg quite as dramatically while doing it.

So if you’re choosing a girl because you believe she comes with a “No Marking Guarantee”… Sorry.

That warranty doesn’t exist. 😉

🐾 But what about the famous boy leg lift?

Yes, eventually your little boy may discover that he has a leg that can be lifted.

And he may become very proud of this discovery.

But lifting a leg and marking inside your house are not the same thing.

Dogs mark for communication. It’s basically their version of leaving a WhatsApp message:

“Koko was here.”

“Bruno was here too.”

“Yes, Bruno… we know.” 😂

And once a male is neutered, hormone-driven marking often decreases significantly. It isn’t a guaranteed cure for every dog, because marking can also become a learned or behavioural habit, but neutering can make a meaningful difference.

So if your plan is to spay your female puppy anyway, why automatically rule out a boy?

Which brings us to…

✂️ “But I’ll just have my girl spayed.”

Absolutely! Spaying is a perfectly reasonable choice for many pet owners and something to discuss with your veterinarian.

But here’s the question:

If you’re going to sterilise your girl anyway… why not consider a boy?

A male puppy can also be neutered, and neutering removes the possibility of unwanted breeding while often reducing hormone-related behaviours such as marking and roaming.

And let’s be honest… A boy’s plumbing is considerably simpler. 😂

There is no season to manage, no spotting around the house and no sudden announcement from your Dachshund that she has decided motherhood is on her five-year plan.

Of course, neutering is a personal decision and the timing should be discussed with your vet based on the individual dog. But don’t dismiss that gorgeous little boy simply because you’re planning to sterilise your puppy.

💕 Now let’s talk about personality…

This is where things get interesting.

Obviously, every Dachshund is an individual.

There are girls who are absolute cuddle bugs and boys who think they’re too important to be bothered with you.

But after more than three decades of watching our dogs grow up, we have definitely noticed some patterns.

And our boys?

Our boys tend to be the hopeless romantics. ❤️

They want love.

They want attention.

They want to be near you.

And preferably, they would like to be sitting ON you.

If you are busy… They’ll wait.

If you’re sitting down… They’ll join you.

If you’re going to the bathroom… Well, obviously that’s a family outing.

Our boys often have that wonderfully uncomplicated personality of:

“You love me? Excellent. I love you too. Now where’s my cuddle?”

They tend to be playful, affectionate and wonderfully people-oriented.

And for families with children, we have found our boys to be especially lovely companions.

👑 And then we have the girls…

Oh, we love our girls.

We REALLY do.

But let’s just say… They have opinions.

Lots of them.

And they aren’t shy about sharing them.

Our girls tend to be a little more independent, confident and feisty.

Sometimes very feisty.

A boy may look at you and think: “Please love me.”

A girl may look at you and think: “You may love me… but let’s first discuss why you didn’t give me that treat.”

And that strong female personality is exactly what makes our girls so special.

They are clever, determined, entertaining and often incredibly devoted.

We wouldn’t want them any other way.

🩷 So… which is better?

Here’s the answer you’re probably expecting us to give: Neither.

There is no magical formula that says girls make better pets or boys make better pets.

Temperament, genetics, early socialisation, upbringing and the individual personality of the puppy all matter enormously.

But what we would love people to do is stop automatically overlooking the boys.

Because sometimes the puppy that gets passed over simply because he’s a boy…

…is actually the puppy who would have been your perfect companion.

💙 Give the boys a chance!

If you’re looking for a Dachshund who loves people, enjoys attention, wants to play and is quite happy to become your little shadow…

Don’t be too quick to say “girl only.”

You may just find that the little boy sitting in front of you has already decided you’re his person.

And once a Dachshund has decided you’re his person…

Good luck changing his mind. 😂❤️

After all, a Dachshund doesn’t really belong to you.

You belong to the Dachshund.

We just like to pretend otherwise.

“Oh, but I really wanted a girl…”

Maybe stop for a moment.

Pick him up.

Give him a cuddle.

Look into those little eyes.

Because there is a very good chance he’ll look right back at you and say:

“Well… I’ve chosen you already.” ❤️

And honestly…

that’s how the best Dachshund stories usually begin.
